Tricia Chuplis, Academic Relationship Manager and Chuck Thayer, ERP Systems Specialist for Students at College of the Holy Cross recently shared how they built 8 language placements eForms, one for each language the college offers. The eForms are being used by all students to determine their correct placement for a specific language course, a prerequisite for graduation.
The forms vary in requirements and could include the student having to take an exam, answer questions about their background with a specific language, or upload an essay/video attachment to demonstrate their knowledge of the language.
In a desire to automate this manual process and due to the sunsetting of the application used for their current placement exams, College of the Holy Cross undertook this challenge as their very first GT eForm build. In this recent Lunch & Learn hosted by Gideon Taylor, Tricia highlighted the Spanish Placement eForm, which is the most used language on campus. The Spanish Placement eForm features an exam page that could be required based on the student’s previous knowledge of the language. Some of the key features of these eForms include:
- Logic to place via questionnaire or open form for student to take the placement exam.
- An exam timer visible on the form page which counts down the student of the time limit to complete the exam and forces submission after the time limit expires.
- Calculation of the exam score based on the student’s current answers.
- Use of code to place a student in a course based on the Test Scores ranges set up in PeopleSoft.
- Automated process of notifying the registrar of the prerequisite courses to assign to the student.
